The Southwest Florida Water Management District conducted a 107-acre prescribed fire at Starkey Wilderness Preserve on Tuesday that continues to smolder.
Smoke from the burn could be seen throughout the area. Staff is still cleaning up any smoldering debris.
The district said that the area burned had a large amount of dead trees from the 2017 wildfire, in addition to hurricane debris. As a result, it took longer to clean up than usual.
River Ridge High School and River Ridge Middle School was forced to close Wednesday due to heavy smoke on campus. In a post on Facebook from the high school they said it was not safe to host classes due to smoke in the classrooms. All campus activities were canceled for Wednesday.
“We ask that you keep your students home today. Students who have been picked up by bus transportation will be returned back to their bus stop,” the high school said.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District apologized that the smoke led to the closures.
