All enclosed slides at Miami parks closed to public after teen’s death

All enclosed slides at Miami parks closed to public after teen’s death

All four enclosed slides that are located at city of Miami parks have been closed until further notice following the death of a 13-year-old boy, city officials confirmed Thursday to Local 10 News.

A city spokeswoman said the enclosed slides are located at Shenandoah Park, Children’s Park, Southside Park and Fern Isle Park. She said all other playground equipment remains open.

The move comes nearly two weeks after a freak accident involving O at Shenandoah Park, located at 1800 SW 21st Ave.

O’s mother told Local 10 News’ Liane Morejon that her son was supposed to be at school on the morning of Sept. 25, but instead rode his scooter to the park about 2 miles away.

She says she learned what happened next from a man who came to the park later that day with his kids and discovered O stuck inside the slide.

“He told me he pulled on him, but he was caught on a screw,” she said. “He pulled again, and my son fell out. His arm was inside of his shirt, and his collar was tight around his neck.”

A Local 10 News crew visited the park and saw that the slide is lined with screws.

The ones Local 10 could observe with our camera were flat, but the witness told O’s mother he was hanging in the middle of the tube by his T-shirt collar, which became caught on a screw and choked him.

After being rushed to the hospital, O was placed on life support.

One week later, he was declared brain dead.

The day O was found, the city of Miami closed the park for what it called a “non-criminal investigation.”

On Tuesday, the city released an updated statement to Local 10, saying “Our deepest condolences are with the child’s family and loved ones. This matter is under active investigation, and the City is working diligently to gather all the facts and bring closure to the family. To protect the integrity of that process, we are unable to comment

further at this time.”
