Police arrested a woman on a vehicular homicide charge Tuesday after they said she was driving a Ford Mustang at nearly double the posted speed limit just before T-boning an SUV in Lauderhill in May, killing its passenger.
Authorities also hit Janeyshia Monique Hilton, 22, of North Lauderdale, with two child neglect charges after they said she had her two children unrestrained in the front seat at the time. She also faces multiple counts of reckless driving.
According to police, the May 14 crash happened on West Broward Boulevard, near its intersection with Northwest 36th Avenue.
Police said Hilton T-boned the 1998 GMC Jimmy, with a driver and passenger inside, as it pulled out of a shopping center. A probable cause affidavit said a vehicular data recorder in the 2019 Mustang showed that Hilton was driving 76 mph in a 40 mph zone westbound seconds before she slammed into the passenger’s side of the SUV, flipping it and killing the passenger, who wasn’t identified in the report.
Hilton, her children and the SUV driver were also hurt in the crash and taken to Broward Health Medical Center, police said.
Since the crash, Hilton has been pulled over for speeding twice in Tamarac, according to court records.
On July 19, she was pulled over by a Broward County deputy, who accused her of driving 57 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 4600 block of Bailey Road. On Dec. 18, another deputy accused her of going 58 mph in a 40 mph zone in the 9500 block of West McNab Road.
According to court records, she pleaded no contest in the first case and the latter case is still pending.
She was being held in the Broward Main Jail following her arrest on Tuesday, according to jail records.
