A retired nurse was killed over the weekend in a “brutal stabbing” in Polk County, deputies said. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the 65-year-old was slain in Davenport. “The victim was well-liked in his neighborhood, and he was known for helping people who were down on their luck,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.  Lake City Fire Department officials say an attempt to keep a puppy warm spelled disaster for a home, but the dog is safe. A man in his early 30s was transported to a hospital overnight after two officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office shot him outside a home in the Dinsmore area, officials said. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Lehigh Acres crash that occurred early Tuesday morning. Gulf Coast News reporters on the scene at Lee Boulevard and Leonard Boulevard North saw multiple LCSO vehicles as well as cones along the road.
