Child struck and killed by car after running into street; mother injured in Melbourne crash

A 3-year-old was struck and killed and their 31-year-old mother injured by an oncoming car after the woman attempted to stop the child from running into the street near their Melbourne home late Sunday.

The deadly crash happened about 8:23 p.m. in the area of Dairy Road and Hall Street. The two were hit just moments after the mother, the child’s other parent and the child were getting out of a parked car, which had a trailer attached, to return home, Melbourne police reported.

The child ran from the mother  identified as Cassandra Lyn Becher  and bolted from behind the trailer into the darkened, northbound lanes of Dairy Road. The mother was attempting to stop the child from running further into the roadway when they were both struck by a 2009 Honda Pilot, police reported.

Melbourne police were called to the site to investigate reports of a crash involving injuries. Officers arrived within moments and found the mother and child, both badly injured, police reported. Both were transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

The 56-year-old driver of the Honda, identified as Stephanos Maminakis, was not injured. Police said drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.
