Clearwater couple hurt in deadly I-75 crash with wrong-way driver.

A Clearwater man and woman suffered serious injuries when the driver of a Kia Soul SUV, heading the wrong way on Interstate 75, crashed into them head-on in Fort Myers.

The crash happened very early Thursday morning, just a little after 1:30 a.m. on the highway south of State Road 82 in Lee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the Kia driver, a 21-year-old woman from Punta Gorda, was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it crashed into the Clearwater couple’s Nissan Rogue, caught fire and became engulfed in flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man and woman, both 59 years old from Clearwater, suffered serious injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
