A crash involving a Martin County public transportation bus injured multiple people and shut down an intersection on Friday morning.

In a social media post just before 8 a.m., the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the “serious injury crash” between a bus and red sedan happened at Southeast Indian Street and Southeast Dixie Highway near Stuart.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 50-year-old man driving a red Ford Mustang was driving southbound on Southeast Dixie Highway when it collided with a Marty bus making a left turn onto Southeast Indian Street.

Pictures from the scene showed the front of the Mustang smashed in and the Marty bus partially on the curb with a cracked windshield.

Bystanders watched in shock.

“The car looks really, really bad. I mean, it’s smooshed, badly. You can see some of the engine parts actually outside,” Mark Lambert said. “You can see a couple of families that are in that bus that are still sitting here waiting, calling their jobs like, ‘How am I going to get to work?’ Looking extremely worried.”

According to the FHP, the 50-year-old was flown to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce with critical injuries. The 61-year-old bus driver was taken to Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital, while the four riders on the were taken to Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital, all with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
