A crash in Okeechobee involving a box truck and semi-truck ended in tragedy on Monday afternoon.
Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said the north and southbound lanes along SW Conners Highway, near the Port Mayaca Polo Club, are closed due to a deadly crash. Crews arrived at the crash site at around 2 p.m.
Following an initial investigation, fire rescue said one truck rear-ended the other. Photos taken at the scene show the front of the box truck wedged into the back of the semi-truck. The metal frame of the box truck bent from the impact, and the cab of the truck unable to be seen.
Fire rescue provided an update stating one of the drivers was killed as a result of the collision, while the other driver suffered minor injuries.
The investigation is being handled by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). Following the investigation by FHP, it was discovered that the 51-year-old man driving the Hino Box Truck was killed, next of kin has not been notified.
The crash report states, there was construction on the road, therefore the southbound travel lane was closed. A construction flagger had northbound traffic stopped. The semi-truck involved in the crash was stopped in the northbound lane when the box truck failed to stop, crashing into the back of the semi-truck.
MCFR said delays are expected and the public is asked to pay attention if driving in the area.
