DeBary man accused of attacking same jogger twice in under a year, deputies say

DeBary man accused of attacking same jogger twice in under a year, deputies say

A 32-year-old Volusia County man is facing several charges after deputies say he attacked the same jogger for the second time in just under a year.

L was arrested May 15 after the victim told Volusia County deputies that a man approached her while she was jogging near the post office on S. Charles Richard Beall Boulevard in DeBary and grabbed her breast, according to an arrest affidavit.

“This man just came up to me and completely sexually assaulted me,” the victim, who does not want to be identified, told WESH 2 in an exclusive interview. “Out of instinct, I hit him because I wasn’t gonna allow that, and I immediately called 911.”

Deputies responded to the area and detained a man matching the victim’s description near the intersection of S. Charles Richard Beall Boulevard and Lake Drive. He was identified as L, according to the affidavit.

During his arrest, deputies said they found a glass pipe with methamphetamine residue in L’s bag. They also found two notebooks “containing multiple female names accompanied with crude remarks, obscene drawings, and descriptions of depraved actions,” the affidavit states.

Investigators said L was responsible for attacking the same jogger on May 31, 2025, just a few blocks from where the most recent attack happened. In that incident, L grabbed the woman and lifted her off the ground while she was jogging past a restaurant on S. Charles Richard Beall Boulevard, according to the 2025 arrest report.

He was arrested then and charged with felony battery. Court records show he spent nearly five months in jail. Seven months after his release, he’s now in trouble again.

“I couldn’t believe what the cop said. I said, ‘There’s no way this is the same guy. Are you sure?’ He’s, like, ‘Yes, it’s the same,'” the victim said.

She told WESH 2 she had no idea the man who attacked her last week was the same man from 2025 because his appearance had changed.

“I looked at the cop, and I didn’t believe him. He’s like, ‘No, this is the same guy. He just cut his hair, dyed his hair,'” she said.

The jogger said she no longer feels safe exercising where the two attacks happened and wants to warn other women to be vigilant.

“If you’re ever going to go jogging or even walking or go anywhere, just check your surroundings, make sure you have pepper spray on you or something that can protect you because there’s a lot of crazies out here,” she said.

L is facing charges of felony battery, stalking, possession of a forged identification, and drug paraphernalia possession. The stalking charge stems from what deputies described as a “repeated pattern of behavior” to harass and batter the jogger.

During last year’s court case, L was ordered to undergo a mental exam and was eventually found competent to proceed.
