The husband of a doctor who allegedly died from an allergic reaction after eating at a Walt Disney World Resort restaurant is suing the resort and the eatery.
Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, a 42-year-old from New York, ate at Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant with her husband, Jeffrey Piccolo, and his mother last October. The restaurant is in Disney Springs, which is part of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
The family’s lawsuit, filed Thursday, says they decided to eat at the restaurant because they believed it would have proper safeguards against Tangsuan’s severe allergies to dairy products and nuts. Instead, the family claims the wait staff was negligent toward those allergies.
The lawsuit alleges a waiter guaranteed certain foods could be made allergen-free. This was allegedly confirmed “several more times” before Tangsuan ordered a vegan fritter, scallops, onion rings and a vegan shepherd’s pie.
Shortly after the family ate at the restaurant, Tangsuan had difficulty breathing and collapsed while shopping at Disney Springs. A medical examiner’s investigation cited in the lawsuit said she died from an allergic reaction, noting elevated levels of dairy and nuts in her system.
Brian Denney, Piccolo’s attorney, says his client is “devastated over the premature death of his beloved wife,” who he says went by the name Amy.
“Amy had a long life in front of her, and she and Jeff had plans to start a family. This never should have happened,” Denney said.
The lawsuit alleges the restaurant failed to properly train its staff, failed to properly warn Tangsuan about allergens in her food and failed to prepare the food without allergens as requested several times.
The family is seeking at least $50,000 in damages as part of Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, along with damages for pain and suffering.
