22 years after the death of his wife, a doting man, was arrested in connection with her murder. News Channel Seven’s Austin mater tells us how one Panhandle County is involved in the history of the case. In December of 2001, then 49 year old Sharon Mills went missing from south Alabama. A month later, her body was found across state lines in Holmes County.

February 1320, we respond to a call for reference to the prison road. Crew had found a body in a ditch just north of Quantico here. Holmes County Sheriff John Tait remembers the day well about 22 years ago. I was not the sheriff then and I actually was working that day. Investigators in Dothan looked into the death, but at the time were unable to solve the case.

One of the suspects that was named and interviewed at the time was Sharon’s husband wasn’t able to prove or disprove a story that time. And the autopsy there was not able to give us a clear cause of death. After all, leads were thoroughly vetted by defense officials. The investigation stalled until now. Fast forward 22 years when on Monday morning, 69-year-old Dwight Mills of Dothan was arrested for murder and abuse of a corpse in relation to the death of his wife.

The Dothan Police Department says new information on the case was uncovered which led to Dwight Mills arrest. Sheriff Tait says it’s not uncommon for someone to cross state lines to dispose of a body in an effort to distance themselves from the crime. There’s got to be a common thing where people would kill people in Alabama and Florida. Since I’ve been sheriff, I’ve known three or four cases where that’s happened.

He says that even though the body was discovered in his Florida county, the case will continue to be handled in Alabama. Speaking with Dothan, they’re made they have enough evidence to secure the warrant because they have enough information that the homicide occurred up there. So therefore, they have jurisdiction as far as the homicide goes. Sheriff Tate says he hopes this breakthrough will be a step towards giving Sharon’s family a bit of closure.

You never want to have an unsolved missing person in terms of homicide. The family, they won’t. I guess you should say closure now. Never really closed, but they want to know what happened in Holmes County. Austin made a news Channel seven and we will continue following this story as more information becomes available.
