Two people and a dog were evacuated after a charging lithium-ion battery burst into flames, sending smoke through the garage of their home.
Martin County Fire Rescue said the fire started at about 6:30 a.m. Monday near Northeast Cypress Lane in Jensen Beach. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the garage. The homeowner told crews a lithium-ion battery had been charging inside.
MCFR said crews quickly evacuated the home, contained the fire to the garage and extinguished the flames. No other structures were in danger.
MCFR is reminding people to unplug batteries when they are finished charging to prevent overheating.
CBS12 News has covered numerous fires involving lithium-ion batteries. Most recently, a fire in Fort Pierce began in a shed at a home in May of 2025.

Lithium-ion battery safety tips
- Only use the charger provided with the device. Avoid extension cords or power strips.
- Never charge batteries overnight or leave them unattended.
- Charge and store batteries at room temperature. Keep away from heat, direct sunlight and flammable surfaces.
- Stop using any battery that is damaged, swollen, leaking or giving off an unusual smell or noise.
- Charge devices on hard, nonflammable surfaces—never on beds, couches or carpets.
Disposal reminders:
- Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling.
- Before recycling, tape the battery terminals with non-conductive tape and place each battery in its own plastic bag.
- Drop batteries at an approved collection site. Many hardware and office supply stores participate.
- Check your county or city website for local hazardous waste collection events or drop-off locations.
