A house fire on Garland Way in Rotonda West led to the rescue of a dog named Rocky by his owner’s uncle, a fire medic, after neighbors called 911.
Hailiey Krause, Rocky’s owner, was not home when the fire broke out.
“We’re very grateful because it could have been a lot worse. I could’ve lost them, and our plan would have been horrible. He’s like my little child,” Krause said.
Laurie Johnson, a neighbor, explained how the emergency services were alerted.
“My husband called the fire department because we smelled smoke,” she said.
Joe Rice, a Charlotte County fire medic, assisted Rocky by providing oxygen after the dog was trapped in the smoke-filled home.
“Just like us, you know, humans, you’re breathing in that smoke. It’s not good for your lungs. And, you know, we want to give you that clean air to help filter out all of the stuff that you just breathed in,” Rice said.
First responders used a special muzzle-like oxygen mask designed for dogs in such situations.
Richard Primak, an Englewood firefighter and paramedic, described the equipment: “We have a mask that’s in the shape of a snout that we could put on the dog snout, and then we just hook it up to our O2 cylinder, just like any other patient, and then we can pull oxygen through that.”
Krause expressed her gratitude for the efforts of her uncle and the first responders.
“They made sure that it was a very big priority to make sure he was OK. Joey, going above and beyond and doing a fantastic job. It’s just, I’m very, forever grateful for him, and he’s definitely our hero,” she said.
The fire reportedly started because Rocky, the dog, might have turned the stove on by accident. Krause plans to remove the stovetop knobs when they are not in use to prevent any future incidents.
