Two rescued from fully submerged car by Martin County sheriff's deputies

Martin County sheriff’s deputies rescued two people from a car that was fully submerged in water near Martin Highway on Sept. 12.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, two people were in a car that was traveling eastbound on Martin Highway on Friday night. The car was then hit by another car, and the impact of the crash forced the car into a deep, water-filled embankment.

The car became fully submerged in the water, according to MCSO.

The victims were able to call 911, but the phone connection was lost before they were able to give their location, MCSO said.

Deputies utilized rapid SOS and were directed to the general area of the crash, but couldn’t see the car from the roadway due to the darkness outside.

One of the deputies rolled down his window, heard the sound of a car horn coming from the embankment, and followed it, guiding deputies to the crash site, according to MCSO.

Deputies then jumped into the water, broke into the submerged vehicle, and pulled both victims to safety.

The victims were transported to a local hospital, MCSO said.

MCSO said the crash is still under investigation, as it is working to locate the car that hit the victims and left the scene.
