Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a driver is dead after an accident that happened on Thursday morning.
Officials said the two-vehicle fatal crash that involved a semi-truck happened just after 5 a.m., when a Chevy Trax was going westbound in the outside lane of Cypress Gardens Boulevard with its headlights as it neared Lazy Lane.
PCSO said the semi-truck went to leave the 7-Eleven parking lot on Lazy Lane, got into the westbound lanes as it headed south to cross the open median, going eastbound on Cypress Gardens Boulevard. This put the semi-truck in the path of the Chevy Trax, as the Chevy driver was unable to avoid the semi-truck, according to officials.
The Chevy became lodged beneath the semi, trapping the driver until first responders arrived, according to PCSO.
The drive of the Chevy was pronounced deceased at the scene. The semi-truck driver was unharmed.
Eastbound and westbound traffic on Cypress Gardens Boulevard was closed for about three hours for investigators.
The investigation is ongoing.
