One man has been taken to the hospital following a crash involving a Brightline train and a car in Pompano Beach.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the collision near the intersection of West Atlantic Boulevard and North Dixie Highway just after 4 p.m., Tuesday.
When crews arrived, they found the car overturned on the tracks with the driver trapped inside.
Firefighters were able to extricate the driver, who was conscious and alert at the scene, and transported him to Broward Health North for treatment.
He suffered serious injuries, according to BSO.
Video, provided by City of Pompano Beach, shows first responders working to extract the driver out of the car moments after the crash.
Officials said the impact of the crash was so forceful that parts of the vehicle, including the engine block and a tire, were ejected and struck the nearby City Commission Chambers building, which was over 100 feet away, shattering a window.
No other injuries were reported and the Brightline train did not suffer any damage from the crash.
Passengers on the train heard an announcement over the speakers shortly after the collision.
“Once again, they’re assessing the train and the tracks to make sure we are able to proceed,” said the operator.
But soon enough, the train would eventually start rolling again.
Witnesses said these type of crashes continue occurring.
“I see this happen all the time. People come, they stop at the train, the train goes by, they get impatient, they don’t wait for the arms to go up. They try and cut around and unbeknownst to them, a train comes from the other direction and that’s when they get hit. I’ve seen that a couple times already,” said Lori Segal.
Repair work has begun on the City Commission Chambers building.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
