A man was arrested in Englewood on Tuesday night after being accused of hitting a man with a baton and showing off a gun.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of assault at a park around 8 p.m.
CCSO said the victim told them that he and his girlfriend were driving to a park to meet a friend. He said he then turned the corner from Rosemont Drive onto Sanders Terrace and saw a woman walking two huskies.
The victim drove around the woman at a slow speed, and as he parked, he saw the woman fall, CCSO said.
The victim’s girlfriend went to check on the woman, who began yelling and cursing at her before running to a nearby house, CCSO said.
The woman then came back out and continued to yell at the couple, saying she had called the cops and that her husband was a cop, according to CCSO.
The woman then walked away down the street. Soon after that, two vehicles came around the corner, and a man, identified as EL, 68, exited one of the cars, brandishing a baton and yelling at the victim, CCSO said.
According to CCSO, L then hit the victim with the baton approximately five times in the leg, shoulder and head.
The victim then started fighting back in self-defense, which is when L flashed a gun, which he had holstered, witnesses said. The gun was never taken out of the holster, CCSO said.
Deputies interviewed L, who said that the victim had intentionally run the woman off the road. L said in his statement that the victim threatened him and hit him first. Deputies noted that he was deceptive during his statement and could not maintain eye contact.
After interviewing other witnesses, deputies arrested L.
L faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
