A family in The Acreage was saved by their smoke alarm when a fire broke out in their home Wednesday night.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) said the fire broke out at a home on 83rd Lane N just after midnight. The alarm woke the family, allowing them to quickly evacuate and call 911.
Photos taken at the scene show the fire still burning when crews arrived.
Units from the West Palm Beach Fire Department (WPBFD) and PBCFR responded promptly, launching an aggressive interior attack to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, PBCFR reported no injuries.
A PBCFR Fire Investigator determined the fire was accidental. Officials emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms, noting that modern fires burn faster and hotter due to synthetic materials, leaving only minutes to escape.
Fire safety tips include changing smoke alarm batteries when clocks are changed, planning escape routes from every room, and setting a family meeting place outside. “Fire safety starts before the emergency happens — working smoke alarms save lives,” PBCFR said.
