A 67-year-old motorcyclist died after a collision with a truck Friday afternoon in Naples, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
According to FHP, the motorcyclist was driving on North Collier Boulevard in the left turn lane, approaching East Elkcam Circle. Another man driving a Toyota Tacoma was heading south toward the same intersection. When the motorcyclist attempted to turn left onto East Elkcam Circle, the front of the truck struck the motorcycle, sending the rider to the hospital, where he later died.
“It’s just super sad to hear, honestly,” said Naples resident Cal Riener. “Yeah, I heard about the accident, and my mom was showing me pictures of it, and yeah, it was just heartbreaking to see, you know, a guy just out doing what he loves, motorcycling.”
FHP confirmed the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which has sparked discussions among riders about safety.
“Well, I’m thinking I’ve ridden a motorcycle for the last 40-plus years, and every year gets more dangerous,” said Jeff Santella of Cape Coral. “I know Florida is a hotbed of accidents. I think 300 last year, and now it’s not a means of transportation for me.”
Santella also highlighted the importance of helmets and road awareness.
“Well, the helmets are a big deal. There’s actually statistics that say, you know, they’re not going to save every life,” Santella said. “It’s just you got to share the road and got to be conscious and courteous of the motorcycles when you’re in a car. They have a roll cage. When you’re on a bike, you are the roll cage.”
FHP said the crash remains under investigation.
