A 57-year-old Fort Myers man was arrested Thursday after causing a multi-car crash while driving under the influence and attempting to flee the scene, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of South Tamiami Trail and Daniels Parkway. Deputies said Raymond Busse crashed into a vehicle while intoxicated, causing a chain reaction that damaged two additional cars in front of him.
Busse then tried to leave the scene by driving through a nearby Mobil gas station, according to deputies.
“It’s awful. I mean, if I had my kids in the car and. Yeah, I don’t even like to think about it, to be honest with you,” said driver L.
An arrest report revealed that Busse’s breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content of .160, which is twice the legal limit. He was arrested at the scene.
“It’s unacceptable; he knew he was drinking and driving, and, you know, he could have killed somebody,” L said.
This is not Busse’s first DUI offense. Deputies said he was arrested in 2014 for driving under the influence and a hit-and-run, a pattern that some find concerning.
“I mean, this tells me that, you know, possibly, you know, this has happened before because, you know, most people who drink and drive, it’s not their first time,” L said.
Another driver, G, shared his frustration about the risks of drunk driving.
“It’s your life. And then you, you harm other people. You ruin families for nothing, and all you need to do is call an Uber. And you know, everybody’s safe,” G said.
Busse was released from the Lee County Jail on Friday.
