FHP: 1 killed in Turnpike shooting in Miami Gardens that triggered hours-long NB lane closures

A shooting on the Florida Turnpike in Miami Gardens left a man dead and led to an hours-long shutdown, authorities said.

7News cameras captured traffic flowing freely on the highway near Hard Rock Stadium, just after 5 a.m. on Monday.

It was a very different situation Sunday night as a large investigation that unfolded into the night led to the closure of the Turnpike and several other roadways.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, shots were fired between a black Cadillac SUV and a silver Hyundai, at around 7:35 p.m. on Sunday.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives said troopers responded to reports of a shooting along the northbound lanes, just south of Northwest 199th Street.

“Victim with a gunshot wound to the head. He was hit by a vehicle … that vehicle is on the left shoulder,” said a dispatcher in radio transmissions.

Troopers arrived to find the victim suffering from a gunshot wound inside the Hyundai. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities learned that the Hyundai crashed into the Cadillac SUV as a result of the shooting. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators surrounded the SUV involved as they combed the scene for clues.

The incident caused several hours of road closures, delays and extensive traffic congestion. FHP troopers said northbound lanes of the Turnpike were shut down for about six hours.

MDSO is leading the ongoing homicide investigation, and FHP is investigating the crash.

Detectives have not identified the victim or specified whether they have taken someone into custody, as they continue to investigate.
