Florida Highway Patrol assisted with handling 17 cats and dogs after a van they were being transported in crashed on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Manatee County on Wednesday.
At 1:17 p.m., FHP was dispatched to Interstate 275 at mile marker 9.5.
At the scene, FHP said they found a Chevrolet van registered to Friends of Strays Inc. that had been traveling north on the interstate when it appeared to suffer a mechanical issue. This resulted in the vehicle rotating counterclockwise and entering the east shoulder of I-275.
The left rear of the van crashed into the concrete barrier wall before coming to a stop.
FHP said that the driver was uninjured, but another passenger may have sustained injuries resulting from the crash.
All animals were reported safe.
No other information is available at this time.
