Firefighter critically injured after being hit by car in Lee County

A Bonita Springs Fire battalion chief was critically injured on Interstate 75 near mile marker 116 in Lee County when an SUV veered onto the shoulder and collided with him early Sunday morning.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, crews responded to a crash on southbound I-75 near mile marker 116 at 12:33 a.m. The firefighter was wearing a reflective vest and standing on the inside shoulder, assisting with traffic from an unrelated crash at mile marker 116.

An SUV was traveling south on I-75 and approached the slower traffic. The SUV then veered onto the shoulder to avoid a collision with the stopped traffic and hit the firefighter, according to FHP.

The firefighter sustained critical injuries and was transported to Gulf Coast Hospital, according to Bonita Springs Fire Control & Rescue District.

Bonita Springs Fire said that he is currently in stable condition.

Bonita Springs Fire said it is working with FHP and that its main priority is supporting the firefighter, his family, and its crews.
