Fort Pierce teen shot, killed at Airbnb gathering

Fort Pierce teen shot, killed at Airbnb gathering

A shooting early Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale claimed the life of a 19-year-old girl from Fort Pierce.

According to our news partners at CBS Miami, Fort Pierce resident MZ was fatally shot during a gathering at a suspected Airbnb rental in Fort Lauderdale.

The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Southwest 16th Street. According to Fort Lauderdale Police, a group of adults had gathered at the residence when a disturbance escalated into a physical altercation. During the confrontation, a man reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot Z. Officers responding to the scene found her lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound. She was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene to CBS Miami, with one person seen fleeing and claiming to have been shot. Others reported hearing loud coughing, suggesting that pepper spray may have been used inside the home. Cell phone footage captured during the incident added to the confusion and fear among neighbors.

Airbnb has since suspended the account used to book the property and issued a statement condemning the violence. “Airbnb bans parties, and we condemn this senseless act of gun violence,” the company said. “We stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is treating the case as a homicide and continues to investigate.
