Homeowner escapes early morning house fire in Fort Myers

A Fort Myers woman awoke to hear sounds of popping due to his house heavy with smoke and flames early Saturday morning.

Firefighters with the Fort Myers Fire Department (FMFD) responded to the house fire off Bassie Court at 1:32 a.m. Upon arrival, the home was fully engulfed in flames and smoke coming from all windows and doors.

After nine minutes, firefighters hosed it down until control. According to FMFD, the fire reportedly started from a window air conditioner.

The woman was able to escape the fire after waking up. However, her aunt, Benola Buchanon, said she was transported to the hospital due to burns.
