Westbound lanes of SR-528 reopen after massive vehicle fire closed them for entire day

An enormous vehicle fire closed all lanes of State Road 528 for nearly 12 hours on Monday.

Traffic cameras showed a large vehicle fire stretching across the lanes of 528 near Innovation Way in Orange County.

Then, officials had to assess and repair the damages to a major Central Florida roadway.

Around 8 a.m., two semi-trucks collided and started a major traffic jam. Videos show drivers using the shoulder to head away from the collision and avoid the delay.

Florida Highway Patrol says the driver pulling a flatbed swerved into the inside lane to avoid traffic ahead, jackknifed and hit the concrete barrier blocking the road. The container truck was unable to stop and collided with it.

Both vehicles caught fire, which was later put out.

The flatbed driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The cleanup was a difficult job, as the burned trucks needed to be moved delicately.

Westbound traffic on SR-528 was directed onto SR-520 instead.

The westbound lanes couldn’t be opened until engineers were certain the bridge could safely carry all that traffic.

On Monday night, CF Expressway said the westbound lanes had finally reopened after undergoing temporary repairs.

The concrete bridge deck was scorched, and officials needed to see if the heat or spilled fuel created any lingering safety issues for either the traffic lane, the bridge or both.

More than 10,000 cars use the road daily in this spot.
