A woman and her family escaped an apartment fire near Jacksonville Beach after her husband rushed inside to help other residents, newly released video shows.
R said at least 12 people were inside the building when smoke and flames spread Sunday. She believes lives could have been lost if she and her husband had not acted quickly.
“My husband, God love him, God bless him forever — yes, he is the hero in all of this,” R said.
Video shows R’s husband running into the building as people shouted for residents to get out. He helped neighbors while R gathered their daughter and granddaughters, she said.
“He immediately was on high alert,” R said. “When I tell you, he moved like nobody’s business to get the neighbors out. And he knew I would react. He knew I knew what to do, also, so he trusted me with our daughter and our granddaughters, and he went and got everyone else out.”
R’s 7-year-old granddaughter, B, said she was not scared.
“Because I’m a brave girl,” she said.
The fire displaced at least six people and left the building heavily damaged. R said she expects it to be condemned and that her family will have to leave behind their home and memories.
“Our memories will be that we lived there when it burned down,” she said. “It’s not going to be repairable. It’s going to be condemned.”
Several tenants have documented electrical problems in the building, and some said they plan to pursue legal action. The cause of the fire had not been released. The landlord could not be reached for comment.
