A woman’s attempt to avoid a deer led to an unusual incident when her Jeep Wagoneer ended up in a 20-foot-deep culvert in Bratt on Tuesday night.

The woman reports that the incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Pine Barren Road, just south of Bratt Road.

She swerved to avoid a collision with a deer, successfully evading a collision, and brought her vehicle to a controlled stop in the high grass on the roadside. She and her passengers exited the Jeep unharmed.

Unknown to her at the time, the vehicle was parked on the edge of a deep culvert.

After exiting, the Jeep plunged into the culvert, triggering the deployment of all airbags and an automatic crash notification to emergency services.

First responders arrived to find the group standing safely at the top of the dry culvert. The Jeep was reportedly in park, and the engine was not running.

Authorities at the scene noted that the woman’s account of the events to the Florida Highway Patrol was consistent with the evidence.

The Walnut Hill and Century stations of Escambia County Fire Rescue responded to the incident.
