Key West High School Mourns Loss of Beloved Teacher and Coach in Tragic Accident

The Key West community is in mourning after Dexter Butler, a history teacher and coach at Key West High School, was found dead in a tragic accident this past Saturday.

According to Miami Herald, the 36-year-old father of two died after falling into a storm drain near the school’s gymnasium.

Early in the morning, Key West police and firefighters responded to a call at the school located at 2100 Flagler Ave.

Upon arrival, they discovered Butler’s body submerged in a storm drain with no indications of foul play involved.

In a statement obtained by the Miami Herald, Superintendent Theresa Axford of Monroe County Schools expressed her condolences to Butler’s family and to all students who knew him.

Superintendent Axford, in her communication with Local 10, elaborated on the circumstances of the accident, explaining that Butler was attempting to retrieve his keys which had fallen down the drain when he lost his balance.

“He was reaching for them, lost his balance, and fell face first, then drowned in 18 inches of water in the drain — really a tragedy on many levels,” Axford told the publication.

Butler had been an esteemed member of the Key West teaching community for approximately 14 years and was coaching the basketball team at the time of his accident.

He had previously coached junior varsity baseball and youth baseball at Horace O’Bryant Middle School, returning to coach at the high school from which he graduated and where he once excelled as captain of both the baseball and football teams.

Monroe County Schools shared that counselors will be made available at both Key West High and Horace O’Bryant Middle School on Monday to help students and staff process the loss.

The investigation into Butler’s death is ongoing, and an official cause has not been released yet by the authorities. As the school and community reel from the shock, tributes have begun to emerge in honor of the man who dedicated his life to education and coaching, touching the lives of many in Key West.
