Leesburg woman arrested on DUI charge after nearly hitting officer’s patrol car

A Leesburg woman was arrested for drunk driving after she ran a red light and nearly hit a police officer’s patrol car.

An officer was turning left when he observed the driver of a black 2008 Chrysler, later identified as 70-year-old CAB, coming toward him on Griffin Road at around 9:20 p.m. Friday, May 2, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. He had to stop so he would not hit her vehicle. He looked back and confirmed the traffic light for westbound traffic was solid red before making a U-turn to initiate a traffic stop.

The vehicle continued to travel for about 0.4 miles while the officer frequently used his sirens to alert B to pull over. The vehicle stopped in front of 1904 Griffin Road, and the officer approached B from the passenger side. He informed her that he stopped her for running the red light and violating his right of way, to which she just stared at him, the report said.

The officer asked B for her driver’s license and registration, but she did not make any moves to look for them. He asked if she knew where she currently was, where she was coming from and where she was going with no responses. She was not able to answer any of his questions or tell him where she lived. She only stated that she loved him, the report said.

The officer once again asked B for her license, and she kept reaching for the glove compartment. She could not find her purse. Due to B’s condition and the fact that she was not able to answer any of his questions, he asked for Lake County EMS to respond, the report said.

While waiting for EMS, B’s husband called, and she needed assistance talking to him. The officer spoke to her husband and informed him of the situation. Her husband advised that she was coming from AMVETS and did not have any medical conditions that he was aware of. He also stated she was not taking any medications besides being on a diet, the report said.

Another officer and EMS arrived on scene a few minutes later. The other officer tried to ask B for her license. One of them was finally able to get her license, and EMS personnel made contact with her from the driver’s side, the report said.

EMS personnel had B step out of the vehicle and informed the officer they could immediately smell a strong odor of alcohol coming off her. They asked her if she was coming from AMVETS due to the logo on her shirt and if she had been drinking. B told them she had been drinking but could not remember how much. EMS advised that there were no medical concerns after their evaluation, the report said.

The officers then moved B to the entrance of 1904 Griffin Road to conduct a DUI investigation. During this time, she was unable to walk by herself, swayed and could not stand straight. She agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises but was unsteady, swayed and kept moving her head, the report said.

The officers ultimately agreed it was unsafe for B to continue the exercises due to her current condition. She later struggled to provide a breath sample and needed extensive instruction on giving a suitable one. She eventually provided results of 0.199 and 0.193, the report said.

B was arrested on charge of DUI and issued a citation for violation of steady red light. The Pennsylvania native was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $1,000 bond.
