Man arrested for leading deputies on chase, crashing RV into tree, sheriff's office says

Deputies say R fled in RV before crashing into 2 vehicles and a tree

An Osceola County homeowner got a scare Friday night when a driver fleeing deputies crashed an RV into his front yard, stopping just feet from his house.

B said he was watching the World Cup when he heard the commotion outside.

“We felt a big impact,” B said. “We got up from the couch, looked outside, and saw at least 20 patrol cars.”

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said 45-year-old R was behind the wheel of the RV. Deputies first spotted R driving a white Winnie RV dangerously and failing to maintain a single lane on East Osceola Parkway near Michigan Avenue around 9:14 p.m. Friday.

A traffic stop was initiated, but R refused to pull over, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies deployed a tire deflation device, which deflated the front left tire, but R continued to flee.

While trying to escape, the sheriff’s office said R crashed into two vehicles, injuring some of the occupants, and left the scene of both crashes.

He eventually came to a stop after striking a tree in the front yard of B’s home near Sherbrook Lane and Berkshire Circle. B credited the tree and muddy conditions for preventing the RV from crashing into his house.

“Thank God he didn’t crash into the house and that there wasn’t a car parked here that he could’ve damaged,” B said.

The sheriff’s office said R tried to run from deputies on foot but was eventually caught. Various drugs were found on him, according to the agency.

Records show R does not have a valid driver’s license, has nine prior driving suspensions, and has been a convicted habitual traffic offender since 2021.

B said the RV damaged his internet line and sprinkler system, but he’s thankful it wasn’t worse.

“Fortunately, nothing happened to us, and he didn’t crash into the house,” he said.

R was charged with driving while license revoked as a habitual traffic offender, fleeing to elude with lights and sirens, reckless driving, DUI, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, DUI damage to property, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.

He was booked into the Osceola County Jail, where he remained as of Saturday evening.
