A man was killed in a crash that shut down a stretch of Interstate 95 southbound in Deerfield Beach early Monday, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at Exit 42 for Hillsboro Boulevard at around 2:35 a.m., FHP officials said.
Authorities said a driver in a Mercedes Sprinter was going south on I-95 when he hit the left side of a Toyota Corolla that was stopped and facing east in the outside lane. However, aerial images from the scene showed a Ford sedan, not a Corolla.
The driver of the sedan, who had been standing next to his car because he was in a previous accident and was waiting for authorities to arrive, was hit in the process, according to FHP.
That driver was identified as a 62-year-old man from Miami, FHP said. He did not survive.
The 41-year-old man who was driving the Sprinter apparently wasn’t seriously injured.
The express lanes remained open, but the main lanes were blocked as troopers responded to the scene. The roadway has since reopened.
Aerial images of the scene show how both the front and back of the sedan are bent toward the left due to the powerful impact. Its windows are shattered and airbags deployed.
Drivers were advised to take Florida’s Turnpike as an alternate route.
