Man riding scooter killed in Miami hit-and-run, police say

MIAMI — A man in his 30s died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter early Tuesday morning in Miami’s Spring Garden neighborhood, police said.

According to the Miami Police Department, officers responded to the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest Seventh Street at approximately 4 a.m. after receiving reports of a man down in the roadway.

When officers arrived, Miami Fire Rescue medics were already transporting the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition, authorities confirmed. The victim later died from his injuries.

“Our detectives are reviewing cameras in the area,” Officer Mike Vega said. “They’re talking to witnesses, there was a Good Samaritan that was traveling southbound, saw a body in the middle of the street and stopped to render aid, and also contacted police.”

A preliminary investigation determined that the victim had been riding a scooter when he was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, police said.

“This is advice to people that are driving and either hit a person, hit something, and they get scared because they don’t have insurance, or they don’t have a driver’s license, or they don’t have the registration with them. If you don’t have all these things, stay on the scene, do the right thing, and then eventually, all you’re going to get is a ticket or a citation,” Vega said. “But in this case, since the driver fled the scene, now he’s facing a more serious charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.”

Police have not released additional information about the vehicle or driver involved.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Miami Police Department or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
