A man was killed after a trespassing complaint escalated into gunfire on Tuesday night in DeLand, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
Volusia County deputies and DeLand police officers responded around 10:47 p.m. to 127 N. Boulevard Court after a caller reported that he had shot a trespasser.
Upon arriving, deputies said they found the caller standing on the side of the road with his hands raised.
The man who had been shot was lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation indicates the shooter lives in a camper at the property. The man who was killed had stayed at the property but was no longer allowed to remain there, deputies said.
VSO said on Tuesday night, the man was found asleep in the laundry room of the house, leading to an argument and the initial trespassing call.
The shooter told investigators that the man advanced toward him despite warnings to back away or he would be shot. The shooter then fired several rounds.
On Wednesday, deputies were on scene investigating the area.
