A 28-year-old man whose Florida driving privileges had been suspended 17 times was arrested early Friday after police said he drove into a North Miami bar and grill, injuring multiple people, then fled.
J was arrested just before 2 a.m. Friday after North Miami police officers stopped a white Chevrolet Malibu near Northwest 119th Street and Seventh Avenue, according to his arrest report.
Police said multiple people flagged down an officer on routine patrol and reported that a vehicle had fled the scene of a crash at Makana Kava Bar & Hawaiian Kitchen, located at 12009 NW Seventh Ave.
Officers later spotted J, who lives in Miami’s Spring Garden neighborhood, driving away from the area and stopped him, the report states.
A witness who came out of the restaurant also saw J driving the vehicle and tried to get him to stop, police said. A victim later identified J as the driver responsible for the crash, according to the report.
A review of driving records showed J’s Florida driving privileges had been suspended 17 times. The most recent suspension, on June 15, was related to a criminal failure to pay, the report states.
J is facing one count each of leaving the scene of a crash involving no serious injury and knowingly driving with a suspended license, records show.
The arrest report did not specify how many people were injured or whether anyone was hospitalized.
As of Friday, J was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
