A massive brush fire that broke out at the Mosaic Company plant in Riverview, which handles fertilizer, on Monday has been contained, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Eagle 8 footage shows first responders trying to control the flames as they approach the Mosaic plant. Large plums of black smoke can be seen for miles around the area.

Rescue crews were dispatched at 5:47 p.m. for reports of a brush fire. When units first arrived at the plant, they found a large brush fire “rapidly expanding due to high winds.” The first had also grown to involve “high-density polyethylene pipes,” HCFR said in a news release.

As crews tried to contain the blaze, Rob Herrin with HCFR said 39 units were on the scene, including a hazmat team. Herrin said the fire had been burning for several hours. No evacuations were made.

“We’re not worried about any kind of evacuations. Fortunately, the wind is blowing the smoke out over the Bay, and it’s going to dissipate,” Herrin said.

During a second update, Herrin said that crews are going to be at the plant for “a while,” adding that crews are “good and got it under control.”

“We know what we’re dealing with here,” Herrin said. “Pretty big fire, pretty impressive.” He added that he believes the fire can be put out within the next hour.

The flames consumed mostly plastic high-density polyethylene pipes and no structures, officials said. HCFR stated that whatever flowed through the pipes was cut off early.

At this time, HCFR said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. No injuries have been reported.

Mosaic said the fire happened during routine maintenance.
