Miami police are investigating after a woman and her 9-year-old daughter were struck by a van Wednesday.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Northeast Second Avenue and 54th Street.

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene as the driver of a Palm Medical Centers van was pacing along the yellow police tape that marked off the area where police said she jumped a curb, striking the victims as they stood on the sidewalk.

According to police, the van driver told officers that she didn’t notice a car had stopped right in front of her and veered right to try to avoid a crash.

Witness Liudmari Nunez was at the bakery nearby and said she heard the mother cry out in pain as she was being lifted into a fire rescue truck.

She said the woman’s daughter was bleeding from what appeared to be an open wound on her head.

The driver also hit a pedestrian crossing sign.

According to police, both victims were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by Miami Fire Rescue and are expected to be OK.

Police confirmed that the driver will be facing a careless driving citation. They are reviewing surveillance video from a nearby Walgreens to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

A spokesperson for Palm Medical Centers released the following statement to Local 10 News Wednesday: “Our thoughts and wishes for a complete and speedy recovery are with those who have been transported for treatment. Our Palm physicians and health professionals help people every day live better lives, so this is especially difficult. We will reserve further comment until we better understand the accident circumstances. We will fully cooperate with all authorities.”
