Motorcyclist killed after colliding with debris on highway

A 65-year-old motorcyclist from Cape Coral died Friday morning after losing control of his vehicle and crashing along U.S. Highway 27 in Highlands County, troopers said.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. on April 24, south of Skipper Road.

According to investigators, the motorcyclist was traveling northbound in the left lane when he struck debris in the roadway. The impact caused him to lose control, sending the motorcycle into the median.

The vehicle then collided with a sewer grate and a traffic marker, ejecting the rider.

Emergency responders transported the man to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation.
