The Florida Highway Patrol said a woman was killed when her truck was struck by a passing vehicle while stopped in the road just after midnight on Sunday.
The 34-year-old woman was driving a pickup truck and towing a trailer loaded with sod, FHP said. Her three passengers were a 19-year-old Tampa man, a 33-year-old Alva man, and a 3-year-old boy from New Port Richey.
Her vehicle was stopped in the right lane of northbound Interstate 75 at the time of the crash, and the two men were checking on an issue with one of the trailer’s tires.
At the same time, a 61-year-old man was driving a semi-truck northbound, approaching the stopped truck. As he passed, the front right of his truck collided with the left of the trailer and the pickup, FHP said.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead on the scene, while the two men outside the vehicle and the young boy all suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
FHP said the driver of the semitruck was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
