A plane inbound to North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines skidded off the runway after its landing gear collapsed on arrival.
The aircraft was making a landing and a faulty landing gear caused the plane to topple over, losing its balance and skidding off the runway before coming to a stop on its belly, at around 10:45 a.m. on Friday.
“It looks like just the gear didn’t secure the plane when he was landing, he touched down, the gear broke,” said Cris Piquet, a frequent flyer at the airport.
The plane ended up on the edge of the runway, with the two people who were believed to be onboard seemingly OK.
No injuries were reported.
The incident comes as the community is scrutinizing the airport following a series of crashes in just the last few months, including two people who were rescued after the pilot had to make an emergency landing in the Everglades on Tuesday.
Back in June, a Cessna crash-landed outside a home near the airport. Good Samaritans helped rescue a family of four onboard the plane.
In July, another plane that took off from the Pembroke Pines airport crashed while approaching the Howard Hamilton International Airport in Turks and Caicos, killing one person.
Commissioners for the City of Pembroke Pines voted on Wednesday to ask for a study to be conducted at North Perry.
“So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get this done,” said City Commissioner Tom Good.
The group of good Samaritans who helped the family trapped inside the crashed Cessna in June were honored by commissioners for their heroic actions.
Officials also compiled a list of 42 incidents over five years, from fatal crashes to mechanical mishaps.
One of those incidents killed 4-year-old Taylor Bishop in 2021 when a plane crashed into a car he was in with his mother just east of North Perry Airport.
“They call it ‘Scary Perry,’ because a lot of people are using this airport, a lot of planes, a lot of students, I learned. I got my license here, and it’s a lot of training going on,” said Piquet.
Pembroke Pines Mayor Angelo Castillo said North Perry Airport, now one of the state’s busiest general aviation airports, could be incompatible with a densely populated city.
“There’s a takeoff and landing, and this is rough math, every minute in the time that it took me to just say that, there’s already been a takeoff and landing, on average, at North Perry Airport,” said Castillo.
City officials have asked Miami-Dade County and the Federal Aviation Administration what options they have.
Pembroke Pines has a town hall scheduled for Aug. 27 at the South Regional/Broward College Library, hosted by Broward County Commissioner Alexandra Davis.
