Shawn and Dave VanBuren, along with their two daughters, are left homeless after a fire at their North Gulf Circle home in North Fort Myers this morning.
Shawn VanBuren described the moment she woke up to the smell of burning plastic, “I ran out of my bedroom towards the kitchen. I saw out of the corner of my eye that it’s actually a fire on the outside of the house.”
Dave VanBuren, who happens to be a retired Miami-Dade Firefighter, says they attempted to extinguish the flames using buckets of water from their pool. “I was surprised at how fast it happened, because it was small. I started dumping buckets of water on there, and all of a sudden, it was up on the roof. Then the firefighters showed up,” he said.
The family is now planning their next steps after the fire, which they say has left them without a home. “So we’re basically homeless again after Hurricane Ian. We need a place to live, we need an electrician, we need a roofer. We need, basics,” Dave VanBuren said.
The couple expressed gratitude for the quick response of the North Fort Myers firefighters, acknowledging that the situation could have been much worse. “We’re fortunate that, we’re all safe and we’re lucky that engine two got here quick. It could have been really bad if it had happened in the middle of the night. We probably wouldn’t be talking to you,” Dave VanBuren said.
A North Fort Myers Firefighter said that the fire seems to have been electrical in nature.
