Flames engulfed a couple’s home on Amber Avenue in North Fort Myers Tuesday night, leaving behind significant devastation and resulting in the hospitalization of a woman named Vicki.
PT, who lives three doors down, said, “It was around 9:30, I believe. We heard a boom and felt it. We thought at first something hit the roof and my wife said, something’s going on.” Concerned about the proximity of the fire, T quickly advised his wife to prepare to leave.
V and her boyfriend, D, were inside the home when the fire broke out. Her son and grandson rushed over from their aunt’s home and found V unconscious, pulling her out through her bedroom window. They managed to save one of their dogs, but tragically, three dogs died in the fire.
T took action by using his hose to spray his house and his neighbor’s house beside the fire. “I got our hose out, started spraying the house, and I thought I’d spray our neighbor’s house right beside us. And then I, I thought, well, the real danger is the house beside the fire. So I asked my neighbor if I could use her hose and sprayed, the roof of the house beside it,” he said. Reflecting on the situation, he added, “It was like you just go into shock mode a little bit. And of course, we’re thinking about the people in the fire and all the people on the animals got out.”
T’s granddaughters, who know Vicki, prepared a get-well-soon package for her, including cookies.
“She made some cookies for them. So hopefully we can get them over to her,” T said.
The family said V is recovering in the trauma unit at a hospital in Bradenton, where she and her boyfriend were treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
Family members said V will remain in the hospital for the next few days, while D was released earlier this morning.
