A plane crashed in Polk County Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials.

Polk County Fire Rescue said the crash occurred around 2:48 p.m. near Lake Buffum Road in Fort Meade.

Fire Rescue officials said the aircraft was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

The occupants in the plane got out on their own and were evaluated for injuries. Polk County Fire Rescue said they were not transported to the hospital.

“Due to quick thinking by the pilot, serious injuries were avoided as the aircraft crashed into an open field without endangering any structures or persons in the area,” Fire Chief Hezedean Smith said in a statement.
