One dead after car hits tree in Collier County

A Naples man, 78, is dead after crashing into a tree in Collier County on Saturday afternoon.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of Golden Gate Parkway and Collier Boulevard around 12:06 p.m.

Mobil gas station employee Kimberly Aguilar said the trees blocked the car from hitting the gas pumps.

“If we didn’t have those palm trees right there, it would’ve crashed the pump,” Aguilar explained.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the driver experienced a medical episode while turning left onto westbound Golden Gate Pkwy. Subsequently, the vehicle drifted and collided with a traffic sign and two palm trees.

Both the driver and his 77-year-old female passenger, also from Naples, were transported to Physicians Regional Pine Ridge Hospital.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.

This crash remains under investigation.
