At least one man is dead and one woman injured after a suspected lone gunman open fired in the Paddock Mall in Ocala, Florida.
While there were initial reports of multiple injuries, the Ocala Police Department stated on social media shortly after 6 p.m. ET that the above were the only two known instances of casualties in the event.
Police say they began receiving calls about an active shooter situation and multiple shots fired at the mall, which is some 80 miles northwest of Orlando, around 3:40 p.m. local time. By the time officers were able to arrive and enter with “heavy presence” in the building, the active shooter threat was believed to be over, and the suspect is thought to have fled.
Calvin and Diana Amos, who were shopping in the J.C. Penney store, told the Ocala Star-Banner that they evacuated the store quickly once they figured out what was going on. They described themselves as scared and apprehensive.
Police also said they are conducting a secondary sweep of the building and have reason to believe that the shooting may have been targeted.
Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., who represents the district (FL-03) where the shooting occurred, posted on social media that her office was following the situation and updates from law enforcement.
Law enforcement members are warning people to avoid the area around the mall until further notice.
