Pedestrian dies after being struck by Broward Co. deputy’s vehicle.

A pedestrian died early Saturday morning after being struck by a Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputy who was responding to another call at the time.

The deputy was heading toward the area of North Powerline Road, in Pompano Beach, around 5:30 a.m. following a lewd and lascivious behavior report, the Sheriff’s Office explained. Its statement indicated he was in the left lane of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and going through the Northwest 15th Avenue intersection.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined the pedestrian, who was identified as Jamil Moreland, was lying on the road or in a crouched position at the time of the collision. The 28-year-old Fort Lauderdale man was pronounced dead by emergency responders from Pompano Bech Fire Rescue.

Investigators ruled out the deputy being impaired, speeding, or mechanical malfunction as contributing factors in the crash, although their inquiry remains ongoing, BCSO noted.

The BSCO statement also stated that the investigation found Moreland was also the person linked to the lewd and lascivious behavior call that prompted the deputy’s original response to the area.
