A man was struck and killed by a freight train Sunday morning, closing multiple crossings north of Vero Beach.

Deputies with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office say they responded to the 77th Street railroad crossing just west of Old Dixie Highway around 7:20 a.m.

Upon arrival, deputies say they located a man who had been hit by the train; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say the length of the train is causing multiple crossings in the area to remain closed.
