A West Palm Beach police officer was shot early Tuesday morning while responding to an altercation inside a home, authorities confirmed.
According to WPBPD spokesperson Rachel Leitao, officers responded to the scene of the altercation along the 300 block of Baker Drive around 2 a.m.
Leitao said the officers were shot at as they arrived and one officer was struck by at least one bullet.
“Responding officers came under gunfire from an individual inside the home. The officers did return fire,” Police Chief Tony Araujo told reporters at the scene. “One officer was struck and taken to an area hospital. He’s currently in stable condition.”
A Local 10 News crew was at the scene later in the morning as investigators seemed to be focused on a grey Chevy SUV with its doors open.
The area was surrounded with crime scene tape and a large majority of Baker Drive was closed off as several Crime Scene units were there along with a mobile command center.
The investigation remains ongoing and Araujo said no further details would be released at this time.
