A Mulberry man died Thursday afternoon after a semi-truck crashed into his car, according to deputies.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said at about 4:10 p.m., a Freightliner was carrying a 53-foot trailer south on SR-37 when it nearly struck a pickup truck that was stopped to make a left turn into Bay Port Valve and Fitting.
A PCSO release said the semi-truck driver, 60-year-old Alberto Benitez of Hialeah, hit the emergency brakes, but the Freightliner then jackknifed and slid across the highway.
The pickup truck driver managed to drive into the business’s parking lot and avoided getting hit, but deputies said the semi-truck ended up sliding into the northbound lane of SR-37 and crashed into a Kia Optima.
The Optima’s driver, identified as 40-year-old Johny Sanabria of Mulberry, was killed at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
