The Port St. Joe father who was rescued and in critical condition following an apartment fire last Saturday has died from his injuries.
The Port St. Joe Police Department shared a Facebook post from the family announcing his passing.
On May 30, shortly after 1 a.m., he and his two children were rescued from their home at the Pine Ridge Apartments.
According to the Port St. Joe Police Department, officers said the apartment was filled with smoke from the floor to ceiling when they arrived.
One of the officers rescued one of the children from the home who was barely breathing. The father and his other child were rescued once EMS and fire crews arrived.
All three were life-flighted to a hospital in Gainesville.
Earlier this week, Port St. Joe Police officers reported the children were awake and playing.
On Wednesday, the family posted the tragic update on Facebook and to GoFundMe.
“On June 1, our family received the heartbreaking news from the doctors that Walter Fletcher Bowers, affectionately known as “B,” had been declared medically gone,” organizers wrote on the GoFundMe page. “B was a beloved son, father, brother, grandson, nephew, brother-in-law, and friend whose love, strength, and presence touched countless lives.”
